tablecloth

Today I thought I would share a cloth with you that I made many years ago and found in the drawer under my bed whilst searching for another cloth. It is now on the dining room table, well in the centre of the table as it is only 32" square.  I was given this with less than one corner done but cannot remember who it was from. Might even have found it in a charity shop or similar but I think it was more likely given to me by an elderly lady who could no longer see,   hang on as I wrack by brain I have a vague motion it might have been one Granny started, she passed away in 1956 and when I grew up and showed an interest in stitchery Mum gave me quite a few things Granny had done  ( Dad`s Mum) my Mum was not a stitcher.. I enjoyed doing it, it is the only piece of cut work I have done, when I look closely I can see errors but it has stood up to washing a few times so has not done badly.
It is not raining today so have hung it on tine line to photo

Last year I also had a go at a slash and stack hanging, I though I had blogged about this before but can find no trace of it so it must have been in my dreams.I followed a video on justhands-ontv which was very instructive.

I have put a narrow border in lime green around it as there are tiny areas of lime in the fabrics,  I did have a dark turquoise wider border on too but did not like it, prefer just a narrow one. the backing is turquoise with white spots.  The batting is one with a sort of sticky side to it, I have this on the top with the quilt on it, not sure if this is correct.  It is all tacked ready for quilting but still cannot decide how to tackle it,   would prefer to do it by hand but as to what colour thread and what pattern  I have no idea. Advice and suggestions please

This is a photo taken during the summer before border etc was added, it shows the colours better as it was a sunny day.

I have added another photo for my CQJP for 2103 that I took in the garden this morning too as the colours are more true than the one I put on my previous blog

Quilts always look better on sunny days. You found a real heirloom with that tablecloth.
I din´t like the sticky battings, I think they turn "hard" once you wash the quilt. For the quilting I don´t have any good advice, because that is the part about quilt making that I do not like very much.
Have a good New Year!

The table cloth is beautiful, it must have taken a long time to make! You are progressing well with your quilt making, you have a good eye for colour.

Seeing your tablecloth, reminds me of Cindy Needham...have you seen the things she does with tablecloths such as yours? You always manage to accomplish so much and so beautifully!

That table cloth is beautiful. It looks way more difficult than quilting. I like your crazy outside too - the colors work together a little better in the natural light. Happy stitching.

If you want to hand stitch it then just little running stitches. If you sew around each block first that will secure it a lot more. Then I would just sew up a few of the seams just to one side I would not do all the seams as I think that you lose the softness of the quilt. It does not matter how you do it as there are no hard and fast rules.

Beautiful tablecloth. I've never done any cutwork; I think you did a wonderful job.

What a pretty quilt top! I know you love green, so if you are going to spend that much time hand-quilting, you should pick a green that coordinates with the fabrics (or go with lime to punch up those lime bits).

My two cents,
Take care,

Your cutwork tablecloth is a beauty! And I like your slash and stack hanging, maybe you can use the colour from the border for quilting to connect it to the quilt more. It's nice to see your CQJP 2013 again.

That cut work table cloth is so charming, and holds a lot of memories and thoughts.
It is quite different from the stack and slash quilt. It has such a nice modern feel, and I think I would use green (same as the border) quilting thread and a geometric design.
The sticky part of the wadding is glue and is used to iron the wadding to the quilt top to keep it from moving round (for items with little quilting and frequent washes, e.g. place mats or childrens bibs).
The CQ quilt is looking great.

The cutwork cloth is lovely. When my group did cut and slash, most of them sent theirs to the longarm service for an all over pattern, which is very unusual as they mostly do hand quilting, so I can't help you with that, but it is lovely, I love the textures on the fabrics

margaret - your work is so pretty and cheerful! The cq2013 put together is very nice -{ must figure a way to put my cq2013 together - none of the blocks have anything in common as to colors or shape - but the Word of God prevails :) } am learning from a pro (you!) and making all the blocks for 2014 in advance, then embroidering them throughout the year, so that they will all go together! thank you for teaching me as you do along the way!

The cut work lovely. It's so good you are using it. Picking up the green border for your thread sounds like the way to go. I don't know enough to advise on a pattern for the quilting.
